Emmerdale teen Jacob Gallagher is taking centre stage in the soap at the moment as his dark new storyline with Maya Stepney continues.
Jacob, played by Joe-Warren Plant, has developed romantic feelings for Maya – his History teacher and the girlfriend of his stepdad David.
After weeks of subtly encouraging Jacob, Maya crosses another line this week by kissing him – which is against the law given his age, plus the fact that he’s her pupil.
Jacob was born on March 31, 2003, meaning that he’s just 15 years old. This was referenced in a recent episode when Jacob lied that he was sleeping with his schoolmate Liv Flaherty and David mentioned that he was underage.
Young actor Joe-Warren Plant is slightly older than his character as he was born on April 12, 2002, making him 16. Show bosses are now trusting him with more mature plots on screen.
Joe-Warren joined the Emmerdale cast in 2010 and the current storyline looks set to be his biggest to date.
While the Emmerdale cast have yet to be interviewed about the latest dark developments, Louisa Clein – who plays Maya – has previously discussed her character’s backstory.
Louisa told Inside Soap in October: “There is a lot still to explore with this character.
“Maya hints later on down the line that she has slightly dysfunctional parents, or certainly a mother figure that is lacking, which has created more of a desire in Maya to be adored and needed. There are things in her past that have created the person she is now.”
She added: “There has been some brilliant speculation that Maya is the new bitch to face up to Charity. I’d love the opportunity to work with Emma Atkins, who plays her.
“I think that the viewers are going to have a big reaction to Maya. She is going to prompt discussion!”
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
