Otters Rockets pocket title

Defending champ Otters Rockets claimed the top honours for the second successive year at the Otters Club BSAM Mumbai Z3-Snooker League. In the grand finale, the former went through plenty of anxious moments and rode a slice of luck before beating back a spirited challenge from Radio Club Tigers 3-1 in a tense final.

The champion received the trophy and a cheque of Rs. 75,000 from Vikram Rao, president, Otters Club.

Radio Tigers received the runners-up trophy and Rs. 45,000 in cash. Losing semi-finalists Khar Gymkhana C and ARC Cheetahs pocketed Rs. 20,000 each and the four quarterfinalists got Rs. 10,000 each.

Playing on home tables, the Otters players enjoyed a favourable roll of the balls and made it count by winning three of the four frames.

Skipper Zenul Arsiwala had an outstanding tournament, winning all the eight doubles matches (three frames in the league and five in the knockout phase from the round of 32 to the final). Radio Club’s star performer was Vimal Mariwala.

Top seed Mahesh Mangaonkar lived up to his billing, outplaying Arun Kumar in a second round match of the JSW 43rd Maharashtra State men’s squash tournament, organised under the aegis of SRFI and SRAM and played at the Bombay Gymkhana glassback courts. He won 11-0, 11-2, 11-4.

Unseeded Aryaman Jaising put up a fine performance to overpower Divit Poojary, who is seeded in the 17/32 bracket, 11-3, 11-2, 11-6 and will meet Mangaonkar in the third round. Vijay Kumar of Chennai, Yash Fadte of Goa also advanced.

Roaring Panthers

Roaring Panthers, with three wins and a loss (to DS Warriors), topped the five-team 2nd MCF Premier Table Tennis League, hosted by Mandpeshwar Civic Federation at its sports complex.

Akira Dragons too ended with three wins and a loss (to Roaring Panthers) to emerge second best (on the basis of number of games won and lost). DS Warriors finished third.

As per the format, the first placed team goes straight into the final. The second finalist will be the winner between the second and third-placed teams
