Promote handloom sector if your concern for NK is genuine, CM told

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy should initiate steps to promote the handloom sector of North Karnataka if he has concern for the overall development of the region is genuine, said handloom activist Prasanna from Heggodu.

Addressing a protest sit-in organised by the Grama Seva Sangha in front of the Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation (KHDC) office here on Thursday, Mr. Heggodu said that recently Mr. Kumaraswamy had made tall promises on ensuring overall development of North Karnataka.

The handloom sector is one of the mainstream traditional enterprises of this region and it has the potential of generating large-scale employment and strengthening the villages if the government extends its supporting hand to weavers. However, it was sad that Mr. Kumaraswamy has totally neglected this sector by not making budgetary allocations for KHDC. As he has spoken about developing North Karnataka, he should keep his words by supporting the handloom sector, he said.

Mr. Prasanna has urged weavers who participated in the protest not to beg the government for help.

The weavers should always keep in mind that they are entrepreneurs and assert for their rights and ask the government why it was not ready to support the handloom sector as it supports industries, software units and even liquor units, he said.
