Rescue and relief work continued on Saturday in rain-ravaged Kodagu, though aerial sorties to airlift stranded people from remote hilly areas had to be given up owing to weather conditions.
According to officials, nearly 3,000 people have been evacuated so far and lodged in the 31 relief centres established by the district administration. Over 2,000 personnel drafted from the Indian Army, NDRF, and SDRF fanned out to rescue people.
Meanwhile, the State Election Commission has postponed the elections to three taluk panchayats in Kodagu — earlier scheduled on August 31 — in view of the extreme weather situation.
