A 23-year-old man was arrested for allegedly stabbing a 20-year-old woman to death in Thane on Saturday. The accused, Akash Pawar, was picked up from near his house in Bhiwandi.
Naupada police said the victim, Prachi Zade, was a resident of Kopri, and worked at a company in Kapurbawdi. Zade was on her way to work on a scooter when Mr. Pawar followed her on his bike and accosted her near the regional passport office at 10.30 a.m.
An officer said, “Mr. Pawar stabbed Prachi seven to eight times and fled. Bystanders rushed Prachi, who was bleeding profusely, to Thane Civil Hospital, where she was declared dead before admission.”
The police learnt that Zade had recently ended her relationship with Mr. Pawar. “Mr. Pawar was miffed at Prachi and assaulted her at her workplace in June after seeing her speaking to a male colleague. A non-cognisable complaint was then registered against him with Kapurbawdi police,” the officer said.
On tracking the location of Mr. Pawar’s mobile phone at the time of the incident, Naupada police found that he was at the scene of crime. The police then apprehended him with the help of Narpoli police.
Senior police inspector S.D. Jadhav, Narpoli police station, said, “We picked up the accused from near his house on Saturday afternoon and handed him over to Naupada police.”
The Naupada police arrested Mr. Pawar on Saturday evening and charged him with murder under the Indian Penal Code.
An officer said, “Mr. Pawar carried a weapon and was lying in wait for Prachi. We are interrogating him to find out how he planned and executed the murder.”
