Youth’s body found dumped in swamp

Four arrested in connection with the case

The Panangad police on Thursday arrested four persons in connection with the alleged murder of a youth. The body of the youth was found in a marshy area at Nettoor on Wednesday evening.

The deceased was identified as Arjun, 20, son of Vidhyan M.S. of Kumbalam.

The arrested were Rony, 23, son of Roy; Nibin Judeson, 20, son of Jude D’Silva; Anandu, 21, son of Shivan, and Ajithkumar, 22, son of Bahuleyan. All the four are from Nettoor.

According to the police, the youths had ganged up to presumably take revenge for the death of a youngster in an accident last year, for which Arjun was believed to have been responsible. The youth who died in the accident was said to be Rony’s elder brother.

According to the police, the accused had got into an argument with Arjun, claiming that the accident would not have happened had Arjun not ridden pillion with Rony’s brother.

Arjun had gone missing on July 2 after he had left home with his friends. It is learnt that when his father approached the Panangad police station with a missing person complaint, the police took little interest in tracing the youth.

Incidentally, the family suspected the involvement of one of the arrested youths in the incident and had alerted the police.

Owing to the reported inaction on the part of the police, Vidhyan filed a Habeas Corpus petition in the Kerala High Court on July 8 making the State government, State Police Chief, Additional DGP; IG, Ernakulam Range; ACP, Thrikkakara; station house officer, Panangadu, and Nibin Judeson as respondents in the case.

When the police found body at Nettor, it was in a state of decay. They suspect that Arjun was beaten to death and was dumped into a swamp.

According to the police, the accused had kept the victim’s phone in active mode, presumably to mislead them. The police traced the mobile to Aluva and Kothamangalam.
