Wife found dead; man booked for torture

‘Victim was physically assaulted for years’

A 25-year-old woman was found dead on January 18 at her residence in outer-north Delhi’s Bhalswa Dairy, the police said on Tuesday.

The victim died by suicide after being allegedly physically assaulted by her husband for years, they said. The husband, who works in a factory, was arrested on Monday on charges of abetment to suicide.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer-North) Gaurav Sharma said a case has been registered. A senior police officer said the accused found his wife hanging in the evening on January 18 after he returned home from work.

The victim, who belonged to Bihar, left a note in which she blamed her husband torturing her physically over the years. The duo got married six years ago in Bihar and shifted to Delhi two months later, the officer said. They have two children — a daughter aged 4 years and a son aged 3 years.

Demand for money

The officer said the accused would torture the woman and demand money from her parents since he is not financially sound. On the day of the incident, he allegedly thrashed her over a monetary issue and left home. Their children were at home when he left for the day.

Family informed

Her family reached Delhi on Sunday, after which the post-mortem was conducted and statements were recorded before the magistrate. Based on their statements and the note, the police have registered a case under Sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of IPC.
