An Electronic Voting Machine and a Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail unit attached to it were destroyed by a voter at a polling booth in Kozhikode Lok Sabha constituency on Tuesday.
The incident occurred at Union Lower Primary School, Edakkad, around 6 p.m., when hundreds of people were waiting to cast their vote.
The police said that K. Pramod, 40, a resident of Edakkad, entered the polling booth and destroyed the machines without any provocation. The police personnel on duty overpowered him and detained him. They suspect that he is mentally unstable.
Action would be initiated against him based on the complaint from the presiding officer. Technical experts said the control panel of the destroyed EVM and the VVPAT unit were found to be intact. New machines were brought in and polling continued there.
