M. Karunanidhi takes oath as Chief Minister at the Raj Bhavan in Madras on February 10, 1969. He was 44 when he took over as Chief Minister after the death of his mentor C.N. Annadurai. Mr. Karunanidhi’s first term lasted till January 4, 1971.
Karunanidhi was born on June 3, 1924 in Thirukkuvalai as Dakshinamoorthy. He changed his name to Karunanidhi inspired by the rationalist movements that were against the use of gods' names.

Stack it up: The wood is cut to size and heaped together. The karimoottam, as it is called in these parts, will have a base diameter of 15ft to 20ft. As the mound gets higher, the workers place a ladder and stack the last few sticks.
In repose: When Mobina, 24, is not taking part in festivals such as the one at the Koothandavar temple at Koovagam in Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu, she makes her hostel room in Chennai her abode. Mobina works with an NGO, Sahodharan, that helps transgender persons like her.
