Burglars have looted 85.4 sovereign of jewelleries and ₹ 2 lakh in cash in two separate incidents in Sayalkudi police limits on Wednesday.
The police said burglars, suspected to be from Madurai or Tiruchi, entered houses of Bairavi, 29, a housewife at Banglamedu in Sayalkudi, and A Jayaseelan, 50, a school teacher at VVR Nagar near Sayalkudi, and decamped with jewels and cash.
The burglars first targeted the house of Bairavi, who had gone to visit a neighbour after locking the front gate around 11.30 am. After breaking open the lock, they entered the house and opened the almirah using keys kept in the house and decamped with 49.4 sovereigns of jewels.
When Bairavai returned home around 2.30 pm, she found the house and alimrah opened and the jewels missing. She was living alone after her husband had gone to a foreign country for employment.
In the second incident, burglars, suspected to be the same gang, broke open the locked house of Jayaseelan and decamped with 36 sovereigns of jewels and ₹ two lakh in cash. After Jayalseelan’s wife, working as panchayat clerk, went out for work and their daughter to school, the house would remain locked till evening.
A police team led by Kilakarai DSP Murugesan and Sayalkudi Inspector visited the houses along with finger print experts and lifted finger prints from the houses. A special team was enquiring whether construction workers working near the houses had any link with the burglars. The modus operandi revealed the involvement of gangsters from Madurai or Tiruchi, Superintendent of Police Omprakash Meena said adding that a special team detained three suspects and enquiring.
