The government may choose Harivansh Narayan Singh, a member of Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal(United), as its nominee for the post of the deputy chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, news agency Press Trust of India reported.
The name of Singh, a veteran journalist and a Rajya Sabha member of the Janata Dal(United) since 2014, comes amid strained ties between allies Kumar and the Bharatiya Janata Party.
According to reports, Sukhendu Shekhar Roy of the Trinamool Congress could be the opposition’s candidate.
A side needs 123 parliamentarians to push their candidate for the post held by Congress leader PJ Kurien since 2012.
The election for the number two spot in the Upper House, which has been held by the Congress party except for one term, will be held on Thursday.
