Chief Secretary puts loss due to Cyclone Fani at ₹58.62 crore

R&B, Panchayat Raj departments have suffered huge damage, he tells Centre

Chief Secretary L.V. Subrahmanyam has pegged the loss inflicted by cyclone Fani on Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts at ₹58.62 crore as per preliminary estimates. He stated that the Roads and Buildings (R&B) and Panchayat Raj (PR) Departments suffered the maximum damage.

During a videoconference conducted by Union Cabinet Secretary P.K. Sinha with the Chief Secretaries of Andhra Pradesh , Odisha and West Bengal on Saturday, Mr. Subrahmanyam said Ichchapuram mandal in Srikakulam district received the highest rainfall of 19.78 cm and about 2.75 lakh people in 145 villages were affected by the extremely severe cyclonic storm.

There was no loss of life and no injuries were reported.

The R&B Department incurred a loss of ₹21.58 crore, followed by PR Department ₹20.06 crore, Energy Department (Visakhapatnam-based Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited) ₹9.76 crore, Horticulture ₹4.10 crore, Municipal Administration ₹1.82 crore, rural water supply ₹43 lakh and animal husbandry ₹3.95 lakh.

Damage tpo houses accounted for ₹86 lakh. A total of 304 houses were damaged, of which 168 were partially and 19 fully damaged pucca houses and 35 fully damaged thatched dwellings.

A total of 15,460 persons were shifted to relief camps in Srikakulam district and 2,000 in Vizianagaram district, and 348 medical camps were organised. Paddy, maize, groundnut, millets, cotton, sunflower and banana crops in about 960 hectares were damaged.

Aid to Odisha

The total permanent damages to the R&B Department stood at ₹20.07 crore and temporary damages ₹1.50 crore and 147 km of roads suffered surface damages.

The Chief Secretary informed that 12 lakh drinking water sachets and two lakh tarpaulin sheets were despatched to Odisha by air and help in other means was provided.
