TIRUCHI: Casting of postal votes by poll personnel for Tiruchi, Karur and Perambalur constituencies began here on Sunday.
About 12,000 employees from different departments of the State and Central governments have been drafted for poll duty. While a section of them have been assigned for election duty in Tiruchi (West), Tiruchi (East), Srirangam and Thiruverumbur Assembly segments, which are part of the Tiruchi Lok Sabha constituency, several of them have been allotted election duty in Manapparai segment, which is part of Karur Lok Sabha constituency and Mannachanallur, Lalgudi, Musiri and Thuraiyur Assembly segments in Perambalur Lok Sabha constituency.
The eligible employees, who were drafted for poll duty in the Assembly segments of Karur and Perambalur constituencies, cast votes in the ballot boxes kept at different places. Earlier, they were given orientation on filling up mandatory details before casting postal votes.
District Election Officer S. Sivarasu, who is also the Returning Officer of Tiruchi constituency, told The Hindu that those, who had failed to cast postal votes on Sunday, would be given chances on April 13 and 17. The officials, who have been drafted for poll duty in four Assembly segments of Tiruchi district in Tiruchi constituency, could cast votes on Electronic Voting Machines in their respective booths, where they would work on poll day. However, they would have to obtain Election Duty Certificate (EDC) from the Returning Officer. They should show the certificates to the agents of candidates at the polling booths before casting votes. eom
