Bihar minister quits after husband is linked to Muzaffarpur shelter home scandal

Bihar social welfare minister Manju Verma resigned on Wednesday days after it was revealed her husband was associated with a man who is the main accused in the sexual exploitation of inmates of a girls’ shelter home in Muzaffarpur.

Verma met Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar in Patna and gave her resignation letter. Kumar had on Monday defended her, calling Opposition parties’ allegations against his government baseless.

Chandeshwar Verma, the former minister’s husband, was allegedly associated with Brajesh Thakur, who operated the shelter and is under arrest as the main accused. The Central Bureau of Investigation has reportedly found 17-odd calls to the Chandeshwar in Thakur’s phone record.

Verma earlier this week said she did not know Brajesh Thakur. “Those who claim that Thakur was seen with my husband at Bihar Niwas, Delhi, must know the room was booked in my name. We have nothing to do with Thakur,” she said.
