A party of sepoys and men recruited from the West Coast for the army leaving Quilon en route to Pollavaram for training broke their journey in Madura on Saturday afternoon. They stayed in different places in and about the Railway Station and in the night after dusk they were seen, it is alleged, loitering on the roads opposite to the station. At about 9 O’clock some of the party having got themselves drunk came in collision with a jutka driver who was peacefully driving along the Mangammal Choultry Road, and dealt with badly. A number of jutka drivers and others who were just then passing along the road, at once gathered round and tried to intervene on behalf of the victim of assault. Soon a free fight ensued between the two parties, the Malayalees taking the aggressive. The recruits who had by this time been outnumbered, fled to the Railway Station towards the platform.
