Repairs to the pumping station located in River Cauvery at Vairapalayam will be carried out and water supply to the residential colonies will be restored soon, said Erode Corporation officials here on Monday.
Two pumping stations, one located along the river and the other in the centre of the river, draw raw water from the wells in the river and after treating, the protected drinking water is supplied to the residents in Veerappanchatiram areas. Due to flooding, the station located in the river submerged and could not be operated.
At present, water is drawn from the well located along the river where sewage water enters the river. With the flow of water in the river reducing, officials decided to restore water pumping. But it could not be done as sand had settled in large quantities in the well.
Also, the water pressure in the river was high and hence the sand could not be cleared.
On Monday, MLAs K.V. Ramalingam (Erode West) and K.S. Thennarasu (Erode East) inspected the pumping stations and held discussions with the Corporation engineers.
The engineers told the MLAs that sand bags would be placed in the river to reduce the speed of water so that sand in the well could be cleaned and pumping could be restored.
Both the MLAs told the officials to expedite the work and restore water supply. The officials said that water supply would be restored soon.
