‘Udupi has contributed a lot to art, culture’

Jaimala lays foundation stone for Zilla Ranga Mandira, Rangayana

Minister for Kannada and Culture Jaimala said on Friday that a Zilla Ranga Mandira and Rangayana were needed for Udupi as it had contributed a number of great artistes to the fields of art and culture.

She was speaking after laying the foundation stone for the two structures behind the APMC yard here.

Ms. Jaimala said she realised the strength of the district when she cleared the list of district-level Rajyotsava awards and saw the number of achievers in the district. “The provision of a Rangayana will help the theatre field here. Already Rs. 2 crore has been sanctioned for the Ranga Mandira and Rangayana, and Rs. 50 lakh has been released. Another Rs. 5 crore will be released in the next budget,” she said.

Later in the day, she presented the district-level Rajyotsava awards at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Auditorium in the District Offices Complex to 26 artistes and four organisations.

One of the award winners, Hiriyadka Gopal Rao, 99, a Yakshagana artiste, could not attend because of ill health. After the function, Ms. Jaimala visited Mr. Rao at his house and presented the award to him.
