Two die in coal heap collapse at port

Two persons died in an accident at Gangavaram Port Limited, here in the early hours of Friday. While one is an employee of GPL, the other is a contract worker.

The deceased have been identified as B.V. Ramaraju (43), employee of GPL, and K. Mohan Rao (59), contract employee.

According to the police the incident took place around 2.10 a.m., when both the deceased were standing close to a heap of coal and directing an operation.

The coal heap suddenly collapsed and both were buried.

A GPL press release said that mechanised equipment were deployed immediately and both the persons were pulled out and sent to KGH, where they were declared as brought dead.

Police said that the coal heap on the berth number 3 was part of the cargo that unloaded from a ship about three days ago. While the unloaded cargo was being cleared in a phased manner, another ship was berthed in the same berth.

“Both the employees were directing the operation for the new ship when the heap collapsed on them,” New Port Police Station Inspector Somasekhara Rao said.

Two died last year

Last year in September, two contract workers died on the spot and two others were injured at GPL.

The incident occurred when the cable of a crane loading iron beams into a vessel snapped and the beams came crashing down, killing the workers.
