Teenager drowns in Sengulam

A teenager from Flower Market area in the city drowned while taking bath with friends at Sengulam, near Perur, on Sunday.

The Perur police said that M. Ranjith, 16, from Ramalingam Road near Flower Market, drowned in the lake during the leisure trip.

According to police, Ranjith and a few other friends had come to the lake around 12 noon.

They said that the teenager and another boy did not venture into the water initially when others were taking bath. However, the duo joined them later.

The police said that Ranjith died after he was trapped in a deep portion of the lake.

The police and fire and rescue services personnel took out the body and shifted it to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for post-mortem.


The police on Sunday detained 38 workers of Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist), who took out a foot march from Periyanaickenpalayam to Salem in protest against Salem -Chennai eight-lane project.

The police said that the party workers, led by State secretary Kumarasamy, were detained as they were not granted permission for the march.

They were released on bail in the evening.

Liquor stolen

Miscreants broke open a TASMAC outlet at Ramanamudalipudur and stole liquor worth Rs. 1.49 lakh. The police said that 1,440 bottles of liquor were stolen when the outlet was opened on Saturday morning.
