A spectator was gored to death and 28 others were injured during a jallikattu held at Karaivetti Parathur near Venganur on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as C. Chinnappa (52) of Thirumazhapadi in Ariyalur district.
According to police sources, Chinnappa was attacked by a ferocious bull when he was witnessing the event near the gallery. With severe bleeding injuries in his chest, he was rushed to the Government Hospital in neighbouring Thiruvaiyaru, but died on the way to the hospital.
It is alleged that the bull was released even before the jallikattu was formally flagged off. By the time the event was called off following the death of Chinnappa, 280 bulls out of 500 registered bulls were released.
Twenty-eight persons, most of them spectators, were injured during the jallikattu.
Of them, 8 received grievous injuries.
They were referred to the Thanjavur Medical College hospital and the K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College hospital in Tiruchi.
Their condition was stated to be stable.
The event was reportedly conducted without obtaining the mandatory permission.
A case has been registered against 5 persons, including P. Chellapillai, president of the organising committee, under Sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 188 (disobedience to order promulgated by public servant) of Indian Penal Code and Section 11 (1) (a) of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
