Shops and businesses in Masinagudi were closed, as the three-day bandh by all the major businesses began on Monday.
Police said that the shopkeepers, store owners and resort owners were protesting against the district administration for failing to correctly identify the elephant corridor and not acting according to Government Order 125. They had said that the Supreme Court’s expert committee had wrongly identified parts of the area as being part of the elephant corridor, leading to the present situation, where many of the resorts and constructions are to be shut down.
Police said around 245 shops in the area downed shutters, and people refused to go to work. Most of the schools recorded attendances of only 50 per cent or less. There are plans to conduct gram sabha meeting on August 15, after hoisting the national flag in the local ground.
Around 60 policemen are stationed to prevent any untoward incidents.
