Pune Rains, Covid-19 Cases Today Live News: With 98 deaths in the last 24 hours, the Pune region recorded the maximum Covid-19 related casualties in Maharashtra. The Pune region also saw the highest 2,018 new cases followed by 876 infections in the Mumbai region.

Pune district remains among ‘districts of concern’ in Maharashtra, with a rising weekly Covid-19 positivity rate that is currently over two times higher than the state average. While the weekly Covid positivity rate in the week of August 18 to 24 in Pune was 5.5 %, it rose to 6.15% in the week of August 25 to 31. District health authorities said efforts were being taken to expedite vaccinations.

In other news, Chandrakant Patil, chief of the BJP’s Maharashtra unit, was booked recently along with other party members for allegedly violating Covid-19 lockdown norms during their agitation seeking reopening of temples. The Pune unit of the BJP had agitated at Kasba Ganpati temple.

Meanwhile, a 60-year-old woman was found dead with serious injuries, consistent with an attack by a wild animal, in an orchard in a village in Khed taluka of Pune district on Wednesday. Forest Department officials said they have found pugmarks of a leopard around the spot.

Chandrakant Patil, chief of the BJP’s Maharashtra unit, was booked recently along with other party members for allegedly violating Covid-19 lockdown norms during their agitation seeking reopening of temples.

The state government has not passed any order to open temples. The BJP had carried out a statewide protest on August 30, saying that if liquor shops and other places are open, then the government should also open temples.

The Maharashtra government has extended the deadline for filing suggestions and objections to the draft development plan (DP) of the Pune metropolitan region till September 16. The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has so far received 26,000 suggestions and objections from August 2 to September 1.

“The suggestion and objections are from 814 villages, including the 23 villages recently merged in Pune Municipal Corporation limits,” said Metropolitan Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of PMRDA, Suhas Diwase.

The draft DP and report have been kept open for inspection for the public at the Art Gallery of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Kalamandir, located within the office premises of PMRDA at Maharaja Sayajirao Gaikwad Udyog Bhavan in Aundh.

The incident came to light on Wednesday when the woman, Janabai Gadade, was found dead in a papaya orchard in Vadgaon Patole village in Khed taluka. Her body had very serious injuries. Local police and Forest Department authorities were immediately informed.

The Pune Municipal Corporation on Wednesday reported 292 new Covid-19 cases. The active count stood at 2,363 and over 189 patients recovered from the infection. Five patients succmbed to the disease taking the total death toll to 8,931 so far.

Maharashtra government’s pilot project to track and monitor inter-district migration, so that migrant children do not fall off the safety net of welfare benefits, was flagged off on Wednesday by state Women and Child Welfare Minister Yashomati Thakur. The project will be implemented in four districts and entail various state departments working in coordination to ensure that state benefits reach children even if they migrate with their parents out of their districts.

Malnutrition among children has been a serious issue in some districts of Maharashtra, which has introduced various welfare schemes to combat it. However, during a site visit to the tribal area of Melghat in Amravati district earlier this year, it was noticed that children who migrate with their parents outside the district often fall out of the radar of benefits and by the time they return to their villages, all the progress made so far in the fight against malnutrition is lost.

A 34-year-old woman threw stones at the police check-post outside Maharashtra PWD minister and Congress leader Ashok Chavan’s residence in Nanded city on Wednesday morning after she was denied entry, a police official said.

The woman arrived at the former chief minister’s house and told the police personnel at the gate that she wanted to meet him, said inspector Anant Narute of Shivajinagar police station.

“The policemen on duty told her that the minister was not at home. The woman then hurled stones at them before leaving the spot,” the officer said. (PTI)

Pune administered nearly 2.5 lakh vaccine doses on Tuesday, becoming the district with the highest single-day vaccinations in Maharashtra. Pune recorded 1,789 fresh Covid cases on Tuesday- the highest in the State. According to an official, out of the 51,238 active patients in Maharashtra, Pune is at the top with 13,515 active infections.

A Rape Crisis Centre has been set up by the Sahyog Trust to provide legal aid and assistance to rape survivors and those who have witnessed rape cases, advocate Rama Sarode said at a press conference on Wednesday. She was accompanied by advocate Surekha Das, Reshma Gokhale, Gaurangi Tajne, advocate Ajit Deshpande, advocate Akshay Desai, Shardul Sahare, and Trunal Tonpe. Sarode said providing legal aid to women recovering from the mental and physical impact of rape would also be an effort to help the women live with strength, dignity and confidence.
