The Belagavi police seized 5 tonnes of rice which was allegedly being diverted from the public distribution system in Halaga and Hirebagewdi villages on Saturday.
Acting on a tip-off, the police intercepted two jeeps carrying 5,400 k.g. of rice valued at Rs. 81,000.
The rice was packed in 25 k.g. bags and the vehicles were impounded.
Ivestigation officers found that Manju of Praveen Pavate in Bailhongal had allegedly purchased this rice from card holders at the rate of Rs. 10 per kg and sold it to someone in Belagavi for Rs. 15 per kg.
Manju and the drivers, Rafiq Tigadi and Ulavesh Kolavuru, were arrested.
Assistant Commissioner of Police K.R. Goni, Inspector C.P. Patil, food inspectors and others were present during the raid, the police said.
A case has been registered in Hire Bagewadi police station.
