Pilgrim found dead

K. Karthik (45), a native of Ambedkar Colony in Dharmapuri, was found dead in Vellingiri hills in Coimbatore on Sunday. The police said that he died due to bad whether while descending the sixth hill after visiting Andavar Temple. He was trekking to the hills with his friend P. Samikkannu (35) at 4 a.m. on Saturday. However, Samikkannu returned after he could not proceed beyond the first hill.

Directive to Inspector of police

The Special Court For Essential Commodities Act Cases, Coimbatore, directed the Inspector of police (Law and Order), Singanallur, to appear before it on August 30 for the trial in a case dating back to 2013 after he allegedly failed to appear for a few hearings. Judge C. Sanjai Baba, in-charge of EC court, also observed that fine would be imposed on the officer if he failed to appear for the next hearing.

The case pertains to the arrest of two persons Sakthivel and Raja Mohammed with 20 kg of ganja in 2013. The court had started trial in the case and examination of witnesses. However, the Inspector allegedly failed to produce witnesses too before the court for past hearings, added sources.

Gutka seized

Officials with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India on Friday seized 965.1kg of banned tobacco products from a warehouse near Sulur.
