Official inspects hatchery centre near Mandapam

Union Food Processing Industries Secretary Jagdish Prasad Meena has inspected the Tamil Nadu Dr J Jayalalithaa Fisheries University’s Marine Finfish Hatchery Centre at the Mandapam Centre for Sustainable Aquaculture (MCeSA) and commended the production facilities of fingerlings.

Mr. Meena inspected the MCeSA at Sathankonvalasai near Seeniappa Dargah near Mandapam and the Baby Marine (Eastern) Exports, a private sea food processing unit in Mandapam on Friday evening. He was accompanied by Ministry’s Economic advisor Bijaya Kumar Behera and Collector S. Natarajan.

C Anand, Assistant Professor and head, MCeSA, explained the facilities for hatching fingerlings of ornamental fishes and sea bass and pompano species for cage culture in sea and brackish water with low salinity. The centresupplied fingerlings of ornamental fishes to amateur breeders and fingerlings of sea bass and pompano to local fishermen He told the officials that the centre had distributed 10,000 fingerlings of sea bass and pompano for local fishermen on July 31. The local fishermen reared the species in cages in Mandapam area. The fingerlings would be ready for harvest in six months. The Central Marine Fisheries Research Centre was also supplying fingerlings and the MCeSA had been set up as an additional facility to meet demand, Mr Anand said. Mr Nair, Director of Baby Marine, explained processing of species for exports. Assistant Directors of Fisheries — Gopinath and Abdul Kadher Jailani — accompanied him.
