Man held on charge of issuing fake disability certificates

The Hassan District Disability Welfare Officer (DDWO) and his staff, on Monday, caught a person allegedly involved in issuing fake disability certificates in Hassan.

Mohan Kumar, a resident of Hassan, is the accused. He allegedly issued fake certificates to many people with forged signatures of doctors and government officers for money.

A.T. Mallesh (DDWO), and his staff caught him near Hemavati Statue Circle in the city with the help of police. He has been handed over to the police for further investigation.

The DDWO suspected the presence of a network engaged in issuing fake certificates when a youth approached him seeking pension meant for physically challenged persons a few days ago.

The officer, upon verifying the disability certificate he was carrying, found it to be fake. The DDWO officials took him into confidence and collected information on how he got the certificate. “That person gave the phone number of Mohan Kumar. We worked out a plan to arrest him red-handed with the help of police. We made a physically challenged person approach the accused over phone seeking the certificate. He assured him to get one for Rs. 1,500. He got the fake certificate done. We caught him while he was taking money on Monday”, Mr. Mallesh said.

As per the procedure, the disability certificate has to be issued only after a panel of doctors certify the applicant’s disability.

However, in this case, the accused had forged signatures of the doctors and the certificate of DDWO as well. “Around 24,000 people of the district have been receiving pension under the social security schemes. As we have some information that like Mohan Kumar, a few more people have been issuing fake certificates in the district, we are verifying documents to weed out the fake claims”, Mr. Mallesh added.
