The father of a six-month-old baby girl, who died under suspicious circumstances in her house at Kaduvetti village in Ariyalur recently, was arrested by the police on the charge of killing the infant.
A case of suspicious death, booked under Section 174 (iii) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, was altered to murder following the arrest of Manikandan, 28.
The baby girl was the second daughter of Manikandan and Anuradha. Her elder sibling was two-and-half years old. The child died after a quarrel broke out between the couple on October 9. The infant’s body was buried in their house without the knowledge of the police.
The medical officer of the local primary health centre, Lakshmidharan, who came to know of the infant’s death through the village staff nurse, lodged a complaint at Meensuritti police station a few days ago. Acting on the complaint, the Meensuritti police exhumed the body and sent it for post-mortem to Mahatma Gandhi Government Hospital in Tiruchi. The body was later handed over to the parents.
Meanwhile, police arrested Manikandan on Monday on the charge of killing the child by strangulation. Police sources said Manikandan was an alcoholic and frequently quarrelled with his wife. A wordy quarrel that broke out between the couple recently took a worse turn. Manikandan allegedly attempted to strangulate Anuradha, who escaped from the house. Later, he allegedly strangulated the child to death. The woman returned home after sometime and the child was buried without the knowledge of the police.
Manikandan was arrested and later lodged in Tiruchi Central Prison. The case was altered and booked under IPC Sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence).
