A 28-year-old man, wanted in connection with a burglary case, fell down and collapsed while being chased by police at Theruruveli in Mudukulathur police limit in the early hours of Friday. His family members staged a protest, alleging it was a custodial death.
Police said the crime police team, which was investigating the July 22 burglary at the house of M. Magadevan in Mudukulathur, visited Theruruveli kanmai, looking for M. Manikandan. Seeing the police, he started running. After running for some distance he fell down, got up and started running again as the police team chased him. When the police team caught him after he fell down again, Manikandan told the police that he has breathing problem and requested medical assistance.
The police party rushed him to the Primary Health Centre (PHC) at Theruruveli, where a nurse examined him and found the pulse rate and respiratory ratio low. She suggested that the patient be taken to the Government Hospital Paramakudi and he died while being taken to the hospital, police said.
The crime police team, which had arrested an accused on Thursday, launched a hunt for Manikandan based on his confession. The suspects had committed the burglary and had looted 17 sovereigns of gold jewellery, Rs. 13,000 and two ATM cards. Later, using the cards with PIN written on the back, they withdrew Rs. 1.30 lakh.
Suspecting foul play, relatives of the deceased, staged road roko agitation on Mudukulathur – Paramakudi road near the DSP office, demanding action against the police personnel. They alleged Manikandan was beaten to death and he died while being in police custody. After Additional SP S Vellaidurai assured necessary action, they dispersed.
Meanwhile, Mudukulathur Judicial Magistrate G Ramasankaran conducted an inquest in the presence of family members at the Paramakudi Government Hospital and suggested that the post mortem be done by doctors from Sivaganga Medical College hospital.
