Kudumbasree enters construction industry

The Kudumbasree Mission is helping women break into yet another male bastion, the construction industry where they have always been limited to the role of support staff.

The Kudumbasree Kozhikode District Mission started 14 construction units recently. As district panchayat president Babu Parasseri laid the foundation stone of a house under the LIFE project at Puthuppady on Monday, it also marked the beginning of the first women-only construction unit in the district under the Kudumbasree fold.

Another salient feature of the unit is that all the ten members of the unit belong to Scheduled Tribes.

“The construction of each LIFE home will finish in 53 days. The first house is coming up at a tribal colony in Eduthuvachakallu,” said Kavitha P.C., Kudumbasree District Mission Coordinator.

The members of the construction units are being trained under specialised agencies or locally available masons at present. In remote areas like Puthuppady besides Meppayyur, Kodiyathur, Karasseri and Maniyur where the other units are located, there is a nonavailability of specialised agencies in the industry. On the other hand, specialised agencies are being used in the case of the four units in the Kozhikode Corporation limits.

“Most of these women have experience in the construction industry. They have been working as support staff for years. They themselves came forward with the idea of all-women construction units,” Ms. Kavitha said.

The units will be mostly entrusted with the construction of small houses under the LIFE project. After the completion of three houses, they will be provided government’s construction licence, so that they could take up small works for the government without a tender being floated.

“This will ensure that they have a means of livelihood even after the completion of the LIFE project,” she added.
