Library scientist Krishna Shripadrao Deshpande, 95, died at his residence in Malamaddi here on Saturday.
Born in Dharwad on May 5, 1924, Deshpande studied at Karnatak High School, Karnatak College and completed his masters in Kannada and English.
After obtaining B.Lib Science degree from Bombay University in 1950, he joined Karnatak University as an assistant librarian and later became the chief librarian.
He was instrumental in establishing the Library Science Department in Karnatak University in 1962. The American Library Association conferred the honorary diploma in 1956.
Recognized internationally as an expert in Library Science, Deshpande was instrumental in setting up and developing libraries at Karnatak University, Gulbarga University, UAS, Dharwad, Mangalore University, Bangalore University and Goa University. He has also authored several books on various topics.
The grandson of Ra Ha Deshpande, founder of the Karnatak Vidyavardhaka Sangha, Deshpande had participated in the freedom movement and was active in social organiSations.
The State government had honoured him with the Rajyotsava award in 1993 and he also received the Kaula-Ranganath award. The last rites were performed at Hosayallapur crematorium.
A meeting to mourn his death will be held at the Karnatak Vidyavardhaka Sangha on Sunday at 5 p.m. said sangha secretary Prakash Udakeri in a release.
