A 15-year-old teenager smothered his aunt to death and then cut her wrist to make it appear like a suicide at the victim’s house in Aminjikarai on Friday, said police.
The boy was nabbed on Saturday with the help of CCTV footage.
According to the police, Sankar Subbu, who runs a grocery shop, and Tamil Selvi, 35, are residents of Vellalar Street, Aminjikarai. They have a 13-year-old daughter and a son. On Thursday, Mr. Subbu returned home in the afternoon and found blood oozing from his wife’s left wrist. He rushed her to a hospital but she was declared dead on arrival. A complaint was registered with the Aminjikarai police station.
Assistant Commissioner Gunasekaran and Law and order Inspector Perundurai Murugan collected CCTV footage from the locality and found the teenager walking into the house on the day of the murder and leaving some time later.
Reprimanded by aunt
“The boy is studying in Class X and was friendly with Mr. Subbu’s daughter. But Tamil Selvi did not like it and scolded him often, which upset him,” said an officer. “On Thursday, when Tamil Selvi was sleeping, the boy smothered her with a teddy bear. He then cut her left wrist with a sharp weapon to make it appear like suicide,” the officer said. The police said he had learnt the modus operandi from a movie. He was sent to the Government Observation Home for Boys in Kellys.
