Govt. eyes SMEs, startups for local defence supplies

The government is increasingly looking at startups and small and medium industries to raise local manufacture in defence and aerospace sectors, Ajay Kumar, Secretary, Department of Defence Production, said on Thursday.

The aim is to achieve absolute self-reliance in these areas, Dr. Kumar said at an event on indigenous aerospace and defence manufacturing here. Meeting the needs of defence PSUs and the Armed Forces, he said, would be a big challenge. “Now is the time for Indian startups and MSMEs to show their capabilities. Like never before, we have liberalised the procurement process and reduced the complexity of the procedures.”

CMD of Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. T. Suvarna Raju, ISRO’s Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre director S. Somanath, Bharat Electronics Ltd. director (R&D) V. Mahesh spoke about opportunities they offer supplier industries.
