Protests on the floor of the House should neither ignore the basic dignity of the democratic institution nor hamper the constitutional rights of the members, Governor P. Sathasivam has said.
Chairing the inaugural session of the ‘Festival on democracy,’ a series of national-level conclaves organised in connection with the diamond jubilee celebrations of the Assembly on Monday, Mr. Sathasivam said people were concerned about the declining standards of democratic institutions and the growing disregard for procedure and convention in such bodies. Legislators should set high standards of conduct for the posterity, he said.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the government had been making path-breaking interventions in bettering the lot of Scheduled Castes and Tribes.
Special recruitments are being conducted for the disadvantaged sections to ensure their representation in government service, he said.
