Chaos around admissions for first-year junior colleges continued even after the fourth merit list was declared on Tuesday, with around 60,000 students still left without a seat. The state education department will now conduct a special merit-based round for the students.
The schedule will be declared on Friday.
“The students, who have not secured admission yet, need not worry as there would be an additional round for them. We will announce the schedule on August 10,” said Rajendra Ahire, deputy director of education.
Of the 81,063 students who had applied for admissions in the fourth and final round, 49,062 students were allotted seats.
Most top colleges in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region saw high cut-offs with just a handful seats left to be filled. “We only had a couple of seats which were filled in this round,” said Ashok Wadia, principal of Jai Hind College.
A large number of students and parents assembled outside the office of the deputy director with their queries. While many complained about not being allotted a seat even after the fourth round, others said that they missed the college of their choice by a few marks only.
“With a large number of seats from the minority quota being blocked until now, the cut-offs in all prominent colleges have gone up in the fourth list. Despite scoring 88%, my daughter is still not able to get the college of her choice,” said a parent.
Meanwhile, the Nagpur bench of Bombay high court will hear a litigation filed by Pune-based group of institutes, SP Mandali, on Wednesday. The court had earlier put a stay on surrendering quota seats in minority colleges before the end of the centralised admission process (CAP). This has left more than 58,000 seats under the quota vacant.
Total seats: 2.70 lakh (excluding bifocal)
Total registrations in CAP: 2,03,120
Students admitted in round 1, 2 and 3: 1,09,644
Total students who have been allotted seats in round 4: 49,062
Students yet to be admitted: Around 60,000
Seats vacant for fourth admission round: Around 1 lakh
Minority quota seats which would be opened after the CAP rounds: 58,283
