The Fisheries Department has opened a control room at Chengannur to coordinate the rescue activities of over 150 boats currently operating in Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta districts. The control rooms currently functioning at the offices of deputy director and assistant director in Kollam will also be part of the newly launched network. Joint director T.S. Suresh Kumar will lead the control room teams.
Every 10 boats will now have a nodal officer and they will be in charge of communicating with the fishermen engaged in rescue operations.
They will guide them to various locations and arrange all facilities for the crew members.

For the last three days nearly 700 fishermen from Kollam have been participating in rescue activities, saving victims stuck in locations where airlifting is not an option.
The Matsyafed will send five new engines to replace the ones damaged during the rescue activities.
The district administration has instructed the RTO to arrange 140 trucks and adequate cranes to bring the boats back when rescue operations in the two districts are over. Owners of damaged boats will be compensated.
