Fake match boxes seized

Officials seized over 28 lakh fake match boxes worth Rs. 12 lakh during multiple raids in and around the district.

As per orders of the Madras High Court, in a case filed by ITC, which produces match boxes with the brand name AIM, Advocate Commissioners raided several units at Kovilpatti, Kazhugumalai, Ettayapuram and Sattur from July 19 to 21 and seized nearly 12 lakh matchboxes.

In a press release, the company said that 10 parties including manufacturers and transporters were involved in the racket. The fake boxes had names such as ATM or AJM with a slight change from the original brand.

The fake boxes had around 20 low quality sticks instead of 40 in the original brand, which is produced by ITC-owned West India match company. The bundles were priced at Rs. 30 less than the original one.

The company said that the High Court took custody of the confiscated materials on July 27. During subsequent raids on July 31, another 16 lakh match boxes were seized from a unit at Sattur. The unit was sealed.
