The Oxford University Press (OUP) has launched English-English-Malayalam dictionary, which will be a “formative guide” for Malayalam-language speakers aspiring to learn English.
With a list of 52,000 entries, related phrases and idioms in English, along with over 200 illustrations, synonyms and antonyms in English, the dictionary gives the correct pronunciation of all English words. Besides, it has detailed notes on English grammar, vocabulary and usage in Malayalam. It also contains seven appendices on English grammar, prefixes and suffixes (with Malayalam translations), and irregular verbs.
The dictionary was launched here on Wednesday in the presence of B. Ekbal, former Vice Chancellor, University of Kerala; N. Subhash, Lexicon Department (Rtd.), University of Kerala; Meena T. Pillai, Professor of English, University of Kerala; M.S. Balakrishnan Nair, Lexicographer and former Professor, M.G. College.
Former Vice-Chancellor G.B. Mohan Thampi is the editor of the dictionary. Oxford University Press (OUP) is a department of the University of Oxford.
The OUP has been publishing bilingual dictionaries for almost three decades in several Indian languages.
