CBI probe sought into funds misuse

Jagadish Hiremani, member of the National Commission for Safai Karmachari, has alleged that the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike officials had misappropriated over Rs. 2,000 crore meant for Safai Karmachari welfare and demanded a CBI probe into it.

He was speaking at a workshop on “Manual Scavenging Act 2013” for Safai Karmacharis and some government officials at the Suvarna Soudha here.

He said that he would send a letter to the Union government detailing the irregularities in releasing Provident Fund and ESI benefits to sanitation workers. Officials have misused this money. They need to be punished, he said.

He directed the State government to take steps for directly depositing wages of sanitary workers into their bank accounts.

Mr. Hiremani said that the commission was recommending action against officials who had failed to deliver benefits to sanitation workers. He urged Safai Karmacharis to see that their profession ended with them and that their children were placed in better jobs. “On the other hand, society should stop stigmatising them,” he said. Government and non-government agencies should create awareness among Safai Karmacharis about their rights, he added.

He urged Deputy Commissioner S.B. Bommanahalli to speed up the process of appointing pourakarmikas in all urban local bodies in the district. He felicitated 37 pourakarmikas working in various urban local bodies.

MP Suresh Angadi and MLA Abhay Patil and others were present.
