A container carrying cars and a lorry laden with rice bags were gutted in a collision at Thulasamma Gudi junction on the Palamaner-Punganur National Highway, 20 km from Palamaner, in the early hours of Saturday.
According to Peddapanjani Police, the container was on its way from Chennai to Madhya Pradesh and the lorry was proceeding to Chennai from Anantapur when the accident occurred.
The impact of the collision led to sparks which turned into flames engulfing the area. The brand new cars in the container and rice bags were gutted along with the vehicles. The loss has been at Rs. 1 crore.
Fire tenders rushed to the spot from Palamaner and Punganur and doused the flames after a two-hour fight.
The mishap left a huge traffic jam on the busy highway. The police swung into action and cleared the traffic.
The lorry driver, who was injured in the mishap, was rushed to the area hospital and his condition is said to be serious.
However, the crew of the container are absconding. The police registered a case.
