The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) – Telangana might be lagging behind in rolling out 4G mobile services in the city, putting it off till early next year, however, it has decided to provide seamless 3G services all along the Hyderabad Metro Rail project corridors.
It has planned to install 64 new 2G and 3G sites along the three corridors of – L.B. Nagar to Miyapur, JBS to MGBS and Nagole to Hi-Tec City. To begin with, it has already provided such connectivity to about 26 stations in the inaugural 30-km stretch between Nagole-Ameerpet-Miyapur, according to Chief General Manager of TS Telecom Circle V. Sundar.
Mobile sites have been put up at Nagole, JNTU, Kukatpally, Bharatnagar, Balanagar, Erragadda, ESI, S.R. Nagar, NGRI, KPHB, Tarnaka, Uppal, Parade Grounds, Miyapur, Lakidikapul, Osmania Medical College, New Malakpet, Malakpet, Moosarambagh, Dilsukhnagar, Chaitanyapuri, Victorial Memorial, L.B. Nagar, Habsiguda, Mettuguda, Rasoolpura and Prakashnagar.
More sites between would be commissioned in the next few months progressively when the remaining routes of the metro rail are thrown open to the commuting public, he said, in a recent interaction. He reiterated that 4G services in rest of Telangana (except Hyderabad) are likely to be rolled out by December with 409 towers under installation in the districts with pilot testing underway at Jadcherla and Mahabubnagar this month.
Existing 3G network with 489 towers to be installed as part of the plan to cover all the important places of educational, religious importance and the likes. These are coming up at Karimnagar – 78, Nizamabad – 77, Warangal – 61, Adilabad – 67, Medak – 56, Mahabubnagar – 22 and Khammam – 17.
Besides, new state-of-art Nokia 2G equipment are also being installed to swap with the old ones in 204 places of Mahabubnagar and 169 places of Khammam – the 2G and 3G expansion plans come at a cost of Rs. 123 crore, said the CGM.
Incidentally, the BSNL has also managed to enhance its market share in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh from 11.83% to 12.01%, slight but significant, considering the competition from the private players.
Between April to June this year, over 3.51 lakh mobile connections were provided in both States with 3.36 lakh pre-paid and 15,051 post-paid connections, taking the overall mobile connections to over one crore with TS at over 33 lakh and AP at 68 lakh connections.
