Union Minister of State for Tourism K.J. Alphons on Sunday visited the coastal village of Chellanam, which has been in the grip of serious sea erosion with the onset of the monsoon season. Mr. Alphons visited the seriously affected areas of Maruvakkad, Bazaar and Velainkanni before holding a brief meeting with officials of the panchayat.
Chellanam panchayat president Mercy Josey, vice-president K.D. Prasad and panchayat secretary P.P. Sheela were among those who attended the meeting with the visiting Minister.
The Minister who was appraised of the situation said he would take up the issue of building breakwaters to protect the shore with the minister concerned, said sources. Mr. Prasad said the panchayat had submitted a memorandum to the government requesting for a Union government package for shore protection measures.
