241 persons booked for drunken driving

The city traffic police have caught 241 persons who were driving under the influence of alcohol in a two-hour campaign against drunk driving here late on Sunday night.

According to officials, 12 teams of traffic police had put drivers to breathalyser test at 12 locations from 9.30 pm to 11.30 pm as part of the special drive.

Among those found in an inebriated condition, 209 were motorcyclists, 16 were auto-rickshaw drivers and 14 were car drivers. The driver of a truck and a mini transport vehicle were also caught, police said.

The vehicles were seized and the violators were produced before a court and fined before a three-hour counselling session on Monday.

Tough action likely

The city police have so far fined 4,225 persons for drunk driving and the court jailed 127 of them for driving public transport vehicles, said in charge DCP (Traffic) T. Rama Prasada Rao.

Meanwhile, the police department has recommended the Road Transport Authority (RTA) to cancel 2,066 driving licences and 217 auto-rickshaw permits of the persons who were repeatedly violating the rules and putting the lives of others in danger. The RTA is yet to take a final call on this and is said to be contemplating temporary cancellation.
