‘I’m making up for what I didn’t have in my childhood’: Singer Annie Lennox reveals why she showers her children with hugs and kisses as she urges parents to ditch their stiff upper lips
Annie Lennox has urged parents to kiss and cuddle their children and ditch their stiff upper lip.
The singer, 64, encouraged mothers and fathers to abandon what she described as their ‘stoic reserve’.
She said she frequently kisses and hugs her children, Lola, 28, and Tali, 25, to ‘make up’ for her own buttoned-up childhood.

Only a week ago Prince William suggested the stiff upper lip mentality of earlier generations had led to a national inability to speak about personal problems.
He claimed it had required millennials to break through the stigma and realise how important it is to talk about issues such as mental health.
Miss Lennox said: ‘I grew up in Scotland in the 50s and in my background, nobody hugged or kissed. It was viewed as too soft, as times were hard and the culture contained a great deal of stoic reserve.

‘I’ve tried to make up for what I didn’t have in my own childhood. I think hugging is very important, along with telling people – especially your children – that you love them.’
Lola and Tali are her daughters with her ex-husband Uri Fruchtmann, an Israeli film producer.

‘We can still thrive, be full of life and have fun,’ she said. ‘And we have so much to offer, after all.’
She added that she had not had Botox or a facelift.
‘Not that I judge women who do have cosmetic surgery – if a woman gets a psychological boost from it, then it’s her choice.
‘I’m 64 and I’ve got wrinkles, so what? I’ve earned a few lines.
‘The pressure on women to look good is so strong, but at this stage in life, I appreciate health is the greatest gift of all.’
Miss Lennox also spoke about her role as a campaigner for ‘global feminism’.
She declared: ‘At the end of the day, global feminism is about the fundamental human rights of girls and women – why should we continue to tolerate disrespect, abuse and disempowerment.’
