Olivia Colman defends her on-screen Heartstopper son Kit Connor after the teen was bullied into coming out as bisexual: ‘I’m so proud of him’

Olivia Colman is defending her on-screen son from bullies after actor Kit Connor, came out as bisexual. 

The harassment began when the 18-year-old starred alongside Olivia, 48, in the Netflix series Heartstopper, as a rugby player whose relationship with another boy at school may lead to more than friendship.

Kit made the announcement on Halloween via Twitter writing, ‘Back for a minute. I’m bi. Congrats for forcing an 18 year old to out himself. I think some of you missed the point of the show. Bye.’

At the Los Angeles premiere of her film Empire of Light Thursday, the Oscar winner went into mama bear mode as she told Variety she was ‘so proud’ of her co-star.

‘I am so proud of him, but I am not proud of how people bullied him. I think people should be allowed to have their own journey.’

‘But I’m incredibly proud of him as a young man to deal with all of that and be in the spotlight. It’s unfair,’ she continued. ‘But he’s amazing. He’s a very beautiful human being.’

Important: Olivia, who shares three children with her husband, Ed Sinclair, said she feels Heartstopper’s message is important. ‘If any of my children experienced that, I’d want them to know that the world can be beautiful and accepting and loving’ (Pictured in LA in March)

Olivia, who shares three children -Finn, 17, Hall, 15 and a daughter, seven, whose name has not been revealed with her husband of 21 years, Ed Sinclair, said she feels the show’s message is important.

‘If any of my children experienced that, I’d want them to know that the world can be beautiful and accepting and loving.’ 

Heartbreaker creator Alice Oseman also came to Kit’s defense after his announcement.

In a comment to the post she wrote, ‘I truly don’t understand how people can watch ‘Heartstopper’ and then gleefully spend their time speculating about sexualities and judging based on stereotypes. I hope all those people are embarrassed as F**K. Kit you are amazing.’ 

Kit may be having the last laugh at his bullies. He and co-star Joe Locke are on the cover of GQ’s Men of the Year issue  telling the fashion magazine after being thrust into the spotlight he wants to support LGBTQ+ designers so he can ‘ support the community’ as best he can.
