“Oh my word!” Fern Britton exclaimed on Twitter today after follower, Could Be Marc?, shared a vintage TV shot. He titled it: “1985. Around the time 10yo me was invited by John Monfort to spend a day at Coast To Coast.”(sic)

Those tights!

The follower added by way of explanation: “We never met as @WickhamLiz was with @FDinenage on the sofa that day.

“I did meet @BobbyDavro1 dressed as Jimmy Greaves in the TVS canteen.”

A surprised Fern shared the photo with her 98,500 followers and fired back: “Those tights!”

She added: “I’m so sorry I missed you Marc xx.”

Twitter users flooded the post with praise and nostalgic memories.

“Oh I had those tights loved them – ‘Jonathon Ashton‘ I think,” Belindanicholsmith reminisced, identifying with the vintage style.

“They were £10 a pair – remember that detail!!”

Julia_St_Albans concurred: “Gosh I remember wearing those type as well, just gave me a flash back!!”(sic)

However not everyone was quite so complimentary.

An embarrassed sophiayogi queried whether her style choices might now be out of date, pointing out: “Omg…. I still wear that style *note to self – change style in 2022!”(sic)

Yet Bradleythompson was smitten, replying: “Still as beautiful Fern.”

The 64-year-old would have been just 28 at the time the shot was taken, having earlier become the UK’s youngest ever national news presenter.

She and Fred Dinenage co-presented Coast To Coast together among other shows including That’s Gardening, and she remained at TVS until the station closed in 1992.

Since then, she has been a fixture on multiple major channels, including a ten-year stint on the ITV show This Morning.

She also appeared in Strictly Come Dancing in 2012 and, in 2018, played Marie in a touring production of Calendar Girls: The Musical.

Other career highlights have included the release of her autobiography, Fern: My Story, which went straight into the Sunday Times Bestsellers list.

However, alongside the fun and frivolous photo sharing on Twitter, Fern has also been involved in some public drama this week.

Highly emotional after hearing Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s plans to delay a decision about further Covid restrictions in the UK, she took to the micro-blogging website to air her frustrations.

“Trying to stay positive even though I’m watching a bumbling, word salad spouting prime minister,” she wrote of one news broadcast.

“Answers all a jumble and clear as a fog on a stormy night at sea.”
