Life is tough for teenagers. And it certainly doesn’t help when your mom is both a household name and the brain behind lifestyle products like a Kegel-exercise jade egg and a vagina-scented candle.
Gwyneth Paltrow’s 15-year-old daughter, Apple Martin, poked fun at her mother’s Goop commodities in a hilarious handwritten note, which The Politician actress later shared on Instagram. “Apples interpretation of my to-do list #quaranteen,” Paltrow captioned the flick.
The note simply read, “Make more vagina eggs & CANDLES.” Well played, Apple.
The Goop products under scrutiny—a Kegel-exercise jade egg and the now-infamous This Smells Like My Vagina candle—are just a couple of the items in the lifestyle brand’s wellness merch, curated with luxurious, feel-good, and usually unusual wares.
Earlier this year, Paltrow spoke about the essenced candle during a guest appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers. “I was with the nose, Douglas Little for his brand Heretic, and we were kind of messing around,” she said. “And I smelled this beautiful thing and I was like, ‘This smells like my vagina.’ And I was kidding, obviously. And we were on mushrooms.”
She paused to laugh at her own joke. “No, we weren’t. We weren’t on mushrooms. … But, so then, it actually became kind of a funny thing where it was a) really funny to us, but also a little bit punk rock. And I think women, a lot of us have grown up feeling certain degrees of shame around our body, or whatever, so this is just a little bit of a subversive candle for all of us out there.”
