Ousmane Dembele could make a sensational switch to Arsenal as Unai Emery looks to make one more signing before the window slams shut on Thursday.
So far this summer the new Gunners boss has been strengthening his side modestly, and has brought in five players for less than £100million.
But according to reports in Spain, Emery is looking to put a marker down on the final day of the transfer window, and is prepared to splash the same amount on just one man.
Barcelona forward Dembele only joined the Catalan club from Dortmund in August 2017 for 97million plus add-ons as a replacement for Neymar, who had just left for Paris Saint-Germain in a world-record deal.
Dembele didn’t feature as much as he would have liked during his first season in Spain, and made just 24 appearances – starting only half of these games.
This summer Barcelona signed Brazilian winger Malcom from Bordeaux, who plays in the same position as Dembele.
Malcom, who was initially set to sign for Roma, and was even on his way to the airport to fly to Italy after Bordeaux agreed a selling fee with the Serie A club.
Dembele to Arsenal
The transfer was disrupted however when Barcelona came in with a better offer in the eleventh hour, prompting Bordeaux to cancel Malcom’s flight and pack him off to Spain instead.
The France international is said to be disappointed by his club’s decision to sign a direct competitor, and, according to reports, is exploring other avenues.
Dembele’s representatives also made this point very clear to Barcelona, and his agent travelled to Catalonia for crunch talks.
Arsenal have been linked with the winger ever since, and speculation surged after Dembele was pictured alongside Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Alexandre Lacazette, Matteo Guendouzi and Henrikh Mkhitaryan last week.
The picture was uploaded to Instagram by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s father, and was captioned: "Very happy to be with family and surrounded by our guys."
Arsenal fans interpreted the forward being in London, and in the company of Gunners players, to be a very good sign.
In response to the Instagram post, one excited supporter wrote: "It’s happening?" while another said: "Welcome to Arsenal," and a third added: "Dembele is an Arsenal player and there’s nothing you can do about it."
Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo claim Arsenal are now readying a mega-deal for the forward, but intend to bring him in on loan first.
The temporary deal would set the Gunners back £10million for the season, before the Emirates club would then part with a further £90million to make the deal permanent.
