We don’t know much about Avengers 4, but we do know that Doctor Strange has a plan for how his buddies can defeat Thanos.
Sure, he’s currently a pile of dust, which complicates things somewhat, but before Thanos unleashed his Infinity Snap, Strange claimed to have assessed “14,000,605” possible futures using the Time Stone and discovered the single one that leads to victory.
After a brief fight with Thanos, Strange gave up his stone to save Tony Stark’s life – despite previously saying he wouldn’t – and a short time later, Thanos erased half the population of the universe. As strange as it seems, that must have been part of the one plan that could save everyone – and a new theory from reddit user LA-Confidential suggests just how Strange saves the day.
For the theory, you have to cast your mind back to the climax of Doctor Strange, where Strange trapped Dormammu in a time loop that reset every time Strange was killed. Dormammu eventually had enough and gave into Strange’s demand to leave Earth and take Kaecilius with him.
The time-loop spell was symbolised by a green ring around Strange’s left wrist that stayed there throughout the sequence and wasn’t broken by Strange’s multiple deaths.
Crucially for the new Avengers 4 theory, it’s pointed out that we didn’t actually see Strange’s left arm during the Infinity War climax, including the moment when he handed over the Time Stone. So could Strange have cast another time loop before Thanos unleashed his devastating Snap?
The theory suggests that this is exactly what Strange did and Thanos is trapped in this loop, even once Strange has turned to dust. The problem is that Thanos has the Time Stone, so once the loop resets, he’ll know he’s trapped in a loop and be able to break it, allowing him to deliver his Snap once and for all.
However, once the loop is reset, Strange will have the memory of what happened – and here’s where the heavily rumoured time-travel plot for Avengers 4 comes in. With all the Avengers reassembled, they’ll use Ant-Man’s knowledge of the Quantum Realm to travel back in time and grab the Infinity Stones to assemble their own Gauntlet. They’ll know that they can’t mess around in time, so once Thanos has been defeated, they travel again in time to replace the stones.
It’s a neat theory, but one we find difficult to believe will play out in Avengers 4, as a lot of work would have to go into ensuring that every question is covered. For one, what happens when the stones are returned to their original place in the timeline? Wouldn’t Thanos just come back and take them again? Also, why wouldn’t Strange just quickly tell Stark of his plan before he turns to dust?
What’s more, Thanos used the Time Stone to reverse Vision’s death after Strange cast the spell (if he did indeed cast it), so is it possible for the stone to be used in a loop?
If anyone can make this kind of complex timey-wimey storyline work in a blockbuster, it’s Marvel, so we’re not ruling it out entirely. However, for now, it just feels too tricky to condense into a movie that already needs to feel like the culmination to a decade’s worth of movies.
Avengers 4 will be released in the UK on April 26, 2019, and in the US on May 3, 2019.
