The temple will close after the five-day monthly puja on February 17
The Lord Ayyappa Temple at Sabarimala opened on Tuesday afternoon for the five-day monthly rituals in the Malayalam month of Kumbhom that begins on Wednesday.
The Sannidhanam witnessed heavy rush as hundreds of devotees from different parts of South India thronged the holy hillock to offer prayers.
The sanctum sanctorum was opened at 4.45 p.m. The rituals will begin with the Ashtadravya Ganapati homom on Wednesday morning. A Sahasrakalasabhishekom ritual and Kalabhabhishekom will be performed at the temple prior to the Utchapuja on all days.
Padipuja, Udayasthamanapuja, Ashtabhishekom and Pushpabhishekom will be the other important rituals to be performed on all days.
The temple will close after the Athazhapuja on February 17 evening.
The police have made elaborate security arrangements at Sabarimala, Pampa and Nilackal in the wake of the announcement made by certain progressive women’s groups to visit the temple for the monthly puja and the Sabarimala Karma Samithi decision to check any such move.
As many as 700 civil police officers, headed by three Superintendents of Police, have been deployed at Sabarimala, Pampa and Nilackal from Tuesday.
