The National Human Rights Commission on Friday issued notices to the Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand governments in separate cases of custodial deaths from suicide.
Taking suo motu cognisance of media reports, the NHRC sought a report from the Tamil Nadu Director General of Police about the custodial death of a man in the Cuddalore district on Thursday. The NHRC asked for the inquest report, the post-mortem examination report and the magisterial enquiry report in six weeks.
According to reports, the 24-year-old man was arrested at 9.45 a.m. on Thursday for withdrawing money using stolen ATM cards. He was found dead in a toilet at 10.45 a.m.
The NHRC also took suo motu cognisance of a custodial death of an 18-year-old man in Uttarakhand. According to reports, the man was arrested on charges of theft on Tuesday and he was found dead in the police lock-up.
